“During my years caring for patients, the most common condition I saw was not heart disease or diabetes; it was loneliness.”
–Vivek Muthy, Former U.S. Surgeon General
Neuroscience confirms that human beings are hardwired for connection, yet the physical and social symptoms of isolation have created what is being called an epidemic of loneliness in America. The health consequences to this condition are equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes per day. As Valentine’s Day is around the corner, what can be done to increase the quality of human connection? We’ll celebrate how UUFC is already doing this work, and turn to our UU ancestor, Ralph Waldo Emerson, to gain additional insights on the gifts of presence.
